About Us

History

At Riddick & Pope, we have deep roots in the area. We practice law here, but this is our community as well. Bill Riddick has practiced law in Smithfield since his graduation from law school in 1984. A native of nearby Franklin, Bill has lived in southeast Virginia his whole life other than his years away at school. Ashby Pope is a lifelong resident on Isle of Wight County. She grew up in Carrollton before she went away to college and law school and now lives here with her own family.

The firm has served the area for more than 30 years in one form or another. We provide general legal services to the people and the small businesses of Smithfield, Isle of Wight, Surry and Southampton Counties and the City of Suffolk as well as the greater Hampton Roads area.

We pride ourselves on serving our client and their varied legal needs, both large and small, from real estate closings, both residential and commercial, to wills, trusts, estate planning. We also represent clients in criminal and traffic matters and we can assist with delicate family law matters involving divorce, child custody, visitation, and child support. Our firm can also advise you on the formation of corporations and limited liability companies and attend to all the legal needs of small businesses. We help land owners with almost any type of real estate/land use matter you can think of including deed preparation, re-zoning matters, easements, 1031 like-kind exchanges, partition suits, and title disputes.

In short, we provide the types of legal services that people need in our community and we do it promptly, efficiently and at a fair price. If we can't help you we almost certainly know someone who can.

PARTNER

WILLIAM H. RIDDICK, III

Bill Riddick has practiced in Smithfield since 1984. It is the only place he has every practiced since becoming a lawyer. Smithfield is his home and he has a passion for this community. He has been the Town Attorney for Smithfield and the Commissioner of Accounts for Isle of Wight County since 1993. He has watched Smithfield and Isle of Wight County grow and prosper and has been actively involved in all those things that have made this such a great community. Bill has a general practice of law but it his experience in real estate and related matters that make him unusual in today's legal world. Real estate is not glamorous but it is a complicated area of the law in which fewer and fewer lawyers have knowledge and experience. Bill is regularly appointed by the courts as a commissioner in chancery to report on complicated real estate issues. Bill is a problem solver and has the unique ability to explain complicated matters in simple and understandable terms.
